Winter 2004

Accomplishments & Accolades

As we begin a new year, congratulations to the following HAN members for reaching professional and personal goals in 2003:

HAN members Brian Frye (LSC 03), Robert Sarvis (LSC 03), and Samuel Cahn (LSC 03) received approval recently to start a new NYU law journal devoted to libertarianism and classical liberalism.

Long-time IJ friend and HAN member James Ho (LSC 97) left the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel last year to become Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Property Rights, chaired by Senator John Cornyn from Texas. In April, he will marry a fellow HAN member, Allyson Newton (LSC 98), in Houston. Best wishes to Allyson and Jim!

Thomas Regnier (LSC 01) graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of Miami School of Law in May 2003. He is clerking for Hon. Melvia Green in Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal and teaching part-time at University of Miami School of Law.

This fall, Susanna Dokupil (LSC 98) authored a Washington Times commentary, "Borking Janice Brown."

Micheal Dean (Policy Activist Conference 94), along with co-counsel Steve Crampton, recently won a declaration of rights in Doe v. Heck in the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court found that the 4th Amendment secures the rights of parents to be free from unreasonable searches by social workers on private property other than the home. The decision was the first holding of its kind in any state or circuit court and offered great declarations on due process and familial interest (substantive due process).

Anil Abraham (LSC 93) was recently named Counsel to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman William H. Donaldson.

Special Appreciation for Pro Bono Efforts

Chad Pekron (LSC 98) recently received the Thomas H. Morsch Pro Bono Award, an annual award presented to selected attorneys at Chicago’s Sidley Austin Brown & Wood in recognition of pro bono work. Chad graciously chose to donate the prize to the IJ Clinic on Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Law School. Congratulations and thanks to Chad for his generosity with his time, talent and treasure.
