Spring 2004 A Supreme ScholarHAN Member Mark Moller Joins the Cato Institute's Supreme Court Review
Prior to joining the Cato Institute, Mr. Moller practiced appellate and complex class action law from 2000 to 2004 with the Appellate and Constitutional Law Practice Group at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington, D.C.. While he enjoyed private practice, Moller decided to join Cato because he wanted to return to the world of ideas and use his legal training to defend freedom and the Constitution. Moller notes, “The Cato Supreme Court Review is unique among legal journals. The Review provides the leading forum for timely, principled analysis of the Court's key decisions by preeminent legal scholars and lawyers who are committed to defending limited, constitutional government." Mark's past work experience helped prepare him for an interesting job in public policy, where he could employ his legal background. "I have been lucky to work at two top-notch legal outfits: the Institute for Justice and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Both are fabulous, challenging places to hone legal skills, and are staffed by some of the very best lawyers in the country." He credits his summer at the Institute for Justice and HAN for sparking his interest in public interest law and the policy world: “IJ showed me that law is not simply a job—that legal practice and advocacy based on ideals and principles can make a difference in the protection of the rights of everyday Americans." Before starting legal practice, Mr. Moller served both as a legislative aide, specializing in class action reform and securities regulation, to House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Christopher Cox and as a research assistant to Washington Post syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer. Mr. Moller is originally from Delaware. He earned his J.D., with honors, at the University of Chicago Law School in 1999, and a master's in common law legal history and theory from the University of Cambridge in 2000. Mr. Moller received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Duke University in 1994. We congratulate Mark on his new position in the freedom fight!
