In Memory of a True Freedom Fighter
"There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root"
Henry David Thoreau
Joseph P. Overton, vice president of the Michigan-based Mackinac Center for Public Policy and IJ HAN member, passed away June 30, 2003, as a result of injuries sustained in a plane crash. He was just 43 years old, but his life left a lasting impression in the freedom movement around the globe.
Joe was known for his work directing the policy efforts of the Mackinac Center and for helping it become the country’s largest state-based think tank. He is best known for his research on educational tax credits and efforts to advance school choice. Joe looked forward to the day when all parents would have the option to choose the best and safest schools for their children.
Joe loved liberty and was a true freedom fighter. Tributes from around the world have poured into the Mackinac Center, and a new free-market leadership center in Kenya is being named in his honor.
Joe is survived by Helen, his wife of three months, and many family members. Those who would like to send an expression of sympathy are asked by the family to consider the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, Michigan.
