License to Work: State Profiles

State Profiles

For each state and the District of Columbia, the State Profiles list the requirements for every licensed low-income occupation studied in License to Work.  The occupations are ranked by burden, using the same method as the national rankings, but readers can sort the tables by any requirement they choose in order to see, for example, which occupations face the highest fees or the lengthiest training requirements in a state.  The tables also indicate how many states license an occupation so readers can easily see which occupations are unlicensed elsewhere.  And the occupation titles link to detailed Occupation Profiles so readers can quickly see how a state’s license requirements compare to other states’ laws for the same occupations.

These pages also include each state’s national rankings for the average burdens imposed by its licensing laws and for the combined number and average burden of its licenses, as well as a summary that provides recommendations for reform.
