Candidates should have 0-2 years of litigation experience, with excellent communication skills and a commitment to litigate cases that secure immediate, real-world impact for our clients and vindicate vital constitutional principles in the areas of economic liberty, free speech, private property rights and school choice.  The ideal candidate will possess a passion for freedom and a readiness to commit to a team-based approach to litigation.  Spanish language proficiency is desired, but not a requirement.

The Institute for Justice seeks an Assistant Director of Communications with at least 5 years of experience successfully pitching stories, and a demonstrated ability to shape institutional messages and strategy. Candidates should have a proven track record of simplifying and selling complex issues to the mainstream media and evolving media outlets. Candidates should have strong writing and editing skills and be able to lead team efforts while forming and implementing creative, sustained communications plans. Persistence, sales skills, optimism and a congenial attitude are a must, as well as a commitment to individual liberty.

Office Assistant (IJ-HQ)

 

Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, seeks an energetic, professional person to fill the role of Office Assistant for its headquarters office located in Arlington, VA. The ideal candidate for this entry-level position will have a bachelor’s degree and/or 0 – 2 yrs of experience. This important staff member will be responsible for:

-Answering all incoming calls
-Receiving and distributing incoming mail
-Setting up meetings and helping plan events
-Updating database with address changes and additions from the web/telephone calls
-Greeting visitors, guests, couriers, etc.
-Mailing general information packets when requested
-Keeping common space in the suite neat
-Maintaining general office supplies
-Helping administrative staff with special projects
-Assisting with mailings as necessary
-Other duties as assigned

Development Assistant

 

The Institute for Justice—the national law firm for liberty—seeks an energetic, professional person to fill the role of Development Assistant in this dynamic, fun, and growing organization.  The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.  The position is ideal for anyone interested in a career in development as it offers tremendous potential for growth and the opportunity to be part of a team of eight professionals as they raise the Institute’s $20 million annual budget.  Specific responsibilities include processing donations each day, managing the Institute’s matching gifts program, creating and mailing in-house mailings, and various administrative tasks related to our communications with donors.  An interest in libertarian/conservative causes is a plus.

Proofreader

 

The Institute for Justice—the national law firm for liberty—is looking for a talented and motivated professional to work as a paid, part-time proofreader and cite-checker of both legal and non-legal documents.  The ideal candidate will possess a meticulous attention to detail, excellent command of the English language, intimate familiarity with legal citations and the Bluebook, interest in constitutional law, and an entrepreneurial spirit.  Legal training, experience copyediting and exposure to libertarian ideas are definite plusses.
 
Terms of employment and compensation are negotiable, though the position does not qualify for any benefits.  It is contemplated that the professional will work from home as an independent contractor with maximum flexibility.  Promising candidates will be asked to complete a sample proofreading and cite-checking assignment.

Constitutional Law Fellowships 

 

The Institute for Justice seeks candidates for its Constitutional Law Fellowship program. Fellowships are open to recent law school graduates interested in gaining hands-on litigation experience by working closely with IJ attorneys on cutting-edge constitutional cases. Successful candidates demonstrate a strong background in constitutional law, an interest in IJ’s mission and a commitment to the principles of free markets, limited government, and individual rights. Fellowship terms are one year beginning each August.

Institute for Justice Maffucci Fellowships

 
The Institute for Justice is seeking paid interns for its Maffucci Fellowship program.  Fellows work closely with IJ’s activism and coalitions team, and assist with exciting research projects, help track controversies and legislation across the country, and provide valuable administrative support to staff on a variety of tasks.  Fellows gain unique experience on the front lines of the fight for liberty. 

The duration of the Maffucci Fellowship is flexible, with a minimum commitment of three months. Undergraduates should attempt to obtain academic credit for their work.  Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.  Law students should apply to our clerkship program (see below). 


Candidates should possess exceptional writing skills, be attentive to detail, and have a strong commitment to individual freedom as well as an interest in property rights, free speech issues, school choice, and economic liberty.

Applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and contact information for two personal references.  The writing sample must be between 400-600 words.  Use Liberty in Action blog posts as a guide. Please send the materials in a single PDF to:

Strategic Research Internship 

 

The Institute for Justice seeks a paid research intern for its strategic research program at the Arlington, Va. headquarters. The internship will include data collection and analysis for research projects. The ideal candidate will have facility in mining online databases and data sources, the ability to create and manipulate spreadsheets, and persistence and good judgment in soliciting information and data from state and non-profit agencies.

The Institute for Justice is the nation’s leading libertarian public interest law firm, litigating to defend property rights, economic liberty, First Amendment freedoms and school choice. Its strategic research program is a unique initiative that combines high-quality social science and policy research with IJ’s cutting-edge litigation.
